Lighthouse Point, FL (PRWEB) September 13, 2012

Debt Management Credit Counseling Corp (http://www.dmcconline.org), a nonprofit organization (DMCC), announced today two new education programs for homebuyers; in person workshops and counseling, and an online course. The homebuyer workshops and counseling program is designed to meet the requirements of most financial assistance programs available to Florida residents. The online course is intended to teach the essentials of purchasing a home and will satisfy the educational requirements of certain assistance programs available nationwide.

The homebuyer workshops and counseling curriculum is designed to comply with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s (HUD) requirements, as well as the National Industry Standards for Homeownership Education and Counseling, of which DMCC is an Approved Adopter. HUD requires consumers to receive a minimum of 8 hours of education and counseling, in any combination, in order to qualify for most of their programs. The DMCC program consists of 6 hours of education in a group workshop format, followed by a 2 hour one-on-one counseling session with a DMCC certified housing counselor. Workshops will be conducted by DMCC in the South Florida area, with the first workshop scheduled for September 29th at the Pompano Beach Civic Center at a charge of $25 for singles or couples attending. The counseling session may be conducted at the DMCC office in Lighthouse Point or over the telephone, whichever is convenient for the consumer, and is provided at no charge.

The online course is a comprehensive home-buying guide titled Make Your Move that was developed by the American Center for Credit Education. The course contains 11 lessons, each of which is followed by a set of review questions to test the consumer’s comprehension. The estimated time to complete the course is 5 to 6 hours, which can be done over an extended period of time at the consumer’s convenience. The fee for the course is $40 payable upon registration.

DMCC provides its homebuyer education programs along with free personal budget counseling and other financial education. Debt management plans to assist consumers with the repayment of credit card accounts are also available. Lower credit card payments obtainable through debt management plans, combined with budgeting, is an option that may help consumers afford the purchase of a home. “We are excited about both of these new programs and the opportunity they provide us to help consumers with potentially the biggest financial commitment they will ever make”, said Jeremy Montanti, DMCC Housing Director. “With all the recent attention to post-purchase housing counseling in order to keep foreclosure rates under control, there remains a strong need to educate consumers before they purchase their home, particularly with regard to affordability”.

Individuals interested in attending a homebuyer workshop should contact DMCC at 866-618-3328, Monday through Thursday 9:00am to 5:00pm ET or Friday 9:00am to 3:00pm ET, and ask to speak with a housing counselor. Individuals interested in taking the Make Your Move online course can register and pay for the course at http://www.dmcccorp.org/homebuyingonline/.
